In the wild there are three types of chinchillas. The Brevicadata, Lanigera and the Costina all have some differences in personalities, body shapes and color. The animals that we breed for pets is a combination of all three types. Each chinchilla will carry some dominant qualities and will show in appearance a particular influence from one or more of these types of chinchillas. I have had a variety of customers say they don't want the mousy looking chins or the rat like ones. This is most likely the Costina type since the face is narrower and the ears are slimmer and longer. When a customer requests the flat boxy faced chinchilla they like the Brevicadata influence in the chin. The Brevicadata and Lanigera combination also have a shorter muzzle. Here at Seward Breeders we have all three type of characteristic influences. We mainly work with Lanigeras. |
